Representation of interrelationships among binary variables under dempster-shafer theory of belief functions

چکیده
This paper presents an algorithm for developing models under Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions for categorical and 'uncertain' logical relationships among binary variables. We illustrate the use of the algorithm by developing belief-function representations of the following categorical relationships: 'AND', 'OR', 'Exclusive OR (EOR)' and 'Not Exclusive OR (NEOR)', and 'AND-NEOR' and of the following uncertain relationships: 'Discounted AND', 'Conditional OR', and 'Weighted Average'. Such representations are needed to fully model and analyze a problem with a network of interrelated variables under Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions. In addition, we compare our belief-function representation of the 'Weighted Average' relationship with the 'Weighted Average' representation developed and used by Shenoy and Shenoy. We find that Shenoy and Shenoy representation of the weighted average relationship is an approximation and yields significantly different values under certain conditions.

Shared Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams for Dempster-Shafer Theory
The binary representation is widely used for representing focal sets of Dempster-Shafer belief functions because it allows to compute efficiently all relevant operations. However, as its space requirement grows exponentially with the number of variables involved, computations may become prohibitive or even impossible for belief functions with larger domains. This paper proposes shared ordered b...
متن کاملAudit Risk Formula with Mixed Evidence
The financial statement audit is the process of collecting, evaluating, and aggregating relevant items of evidence pertaining to various management assertions related to the financial statement accounts to determine whether the company’s financial statements present fairly its financial position. The Dempster-Shafer theory [1] of belief functions has been argued to be an appropriate framework f...
متن کاملbelief function and the transferable belief model
Beliefs are the result of uncertainty. Sometimes uncertainty is because of a random process and sometimes the result of lack of information. In the past, the only solution in situations of uncertainty has been the probability theory. But the past few decades, various theories of other variables and systems are put forward for the systems with no adequate and accurate information. One of these a...
متن کاملAn Information Systems Security Risk Assessment Model under Dempster-Shafer Theory of Belief Functions
This study develops an alternative methodology for the risk analysis of information systems security (ISS), an evidential reasoning approach under the Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions. The approach has the following important dimensions. First, the evidential reasoning approach provides a rigorous, structured manner to incorporate relevant ISS risk factors, related counter measures an...
متن کاملIndependence, Conditionality and Structure of Dempster-Shafer Belief Functions
Several approaches of structuring (factorization, decomposition) of Dempster-Shafer joint belief functions from literature are reviewed with special emphasis on their capability to capture independence from the point of view of the claim that belief functions generalize bayes notion of probability. It is demonstrated that Zhu and Lee's {Zhu:93} logical networks and Smets' {Smets:93} directed ac...
